Thankfully, The Memory Police is just a work of fiction because it is a terrifying concept. This book, by Yoko Ogawa, is subtle, and its prose has a sweetness to it, but beneath lies darkness. As I read it, I cannot guess where the story will lead to next, and that is what I find most unnerving. From ferry boats to roses, what will disappear next and why? What effect will it have on society? I haven’t reached the end of the book yet because I am trying to make it last. If this sounds up your alley, read this review in The New Yorker. It will surely end up convincing you to pick this book up.
